Journalist Jeff Yang wrote, “The Academy might just have finally embraced the lesson that activists - like April Reign, creator of #OscarsSoWhite, and Ava DuVernay, a filmmaker who has been outspoken about the lack of diversity in Hollywood - have been patiently trying to teach.” The L.A. Not only was Bong Joon-Ho’s Parasite the first foreign film and first non-English film to win the Oscar for Best Picture, the movie was also celebrated, welcomed, and given a warm hug by most of the Asian American community as well. However, for me those concerns were quelled with the success of the Korean movie “Parasite.” On the one hand, I could imagine a world where Asian Americans felt resentful, overshadowed, or even concerned about being stereotyped as foreign or “other,” if American audiences confused them with international Asian stars, who don’t speak English fluently or aren’t as familiar with American culture. I’ve often wondered how Asian Americans in the entertainment community would receive strictly “Asian” films.
But I wouldn’t characterize Liu, Gong Li, Jet Li, or most of the other actors as American. The movie also stars Americans Jason Scott Lee, Rosalind Chao, and of course Tzi Ma, a truly pioneering Asian American in entertainment. for four years, then moved back to China in 2002, where she’s lived and worked ever since, although she is also evidently a naturalized American citizen. The titular character is played by Yifei Liu, who was born in China, moved to the United States at age 10, lived in the U.S. Most of the cast of characters are Asian but not Asian American. I also loved director Niki Caro’s 2003 movie Whale Rider.Īnd the movie is another step forward in terms of representation and diversity - although it’s a bit of a wild card. It features some of my long time favorite actors, i.e. The movie itself has been critically acclaimed, currently sitting at 82% on Rotten Tomatoes.
And compared to the cost of tickets for a party of four, $30 is significantly less expensive - especially considering the likelihood of multiple viewings.
We already have a Disney Plus subscription. There are also many reasons why Mulan makes sense, not just for me but for my family. At a gut level, when I watch the trailer for Mulan, the inner kid in me reacts with, “Wow, cool!” (Oh Disney, you marketing geniuses.) Here’s the thing - I’m ready for this movie. And as much as I want to hit that “Get Premier Access” button, something is holding me back. The live action Mulan comes to streaming on Disney Plus today.
